Glamour, fame fortune. Just some of the usual reasons that children dream of growing up and becoming an actor. Little do they realize at a tender age that it is not all roses and curtain calls. To become a successful actor often requires sacrifice, luck, innate talent, and hard work.
Many of today’s success stories began their careers by attending a dramatic arts academy or a prestigious school such as The Julliard School, Carnegie Mellon School of Drama, or the Yale School of Drama. Some procured their training overseas at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art, the Oxford School of Drama or The Bridge Theatre Training Company. Even those who did not attain a degree in some form of dramatic arts have supplemented their natural ability with acting classes.
Entry to drama school is usually through an audition. Some schools make this a two-stage process. Auditions usually involve the performance of monologues and group workshops, and may also include a singing activity. This varies from academy to academy. If this is the case for an acting degree, the school may look more at how an applicant can put character into the song, rather than how well they can sing. For a musical theatre degree, the emphasis is on showing one's talent as a singer. Most colleges offer recall auditions, often in several stages, in which students being considered for entry onto a course are brought back to audition again, further demonstrating their talents.
